After a 2 year wait, finally we get to see a pro Sanda VS other styles kind of tournament once again! This time, on the evening of 23.12.2005, Hatsuo Royama has assembled a young Kyokushin Karate team from Russia to challenge the Chinese. Most notable of the fighters is of course the returning Sanda Legend Liu Hailong (left) from the Chinese side, and Osipov Sergei Alexandrovich (right), a 3x Russian Open champion as well as the personal bodyguard of President Putin.
Here is the fighter line-up and results:
70KG
Chinese fighter:Han Yuchu
Ht:1.80m
Past results:2005 10th National Games Silver Medalist, 2003 World Sanda Tournament Champion
Russian fighter:Jafarov Emil Ruslanovich
Ht:173cm
Age:20
Past results:2005 World Wt Tour Champion & Int. Kyokushin Cup winner
Today’s result: Han wins 4:1. To Jafarov’s credit, although he was out-scored for most of the bout, he showed great fighting spirit and fought the best he could through out the 5 rounds. Some of his well executed spin kicks managed to surprise Han as well.
75KG
Chinese fighter:Baoligao
Ht:178cm
Past results:2004 China VS Japan Champion, 2003 World Freestyle Kickboxing Champion
Russian fighter:Abdurashidov Shamsudin Abdurashidovich
Ht:175cm
Age:20
Past results:2004 Int. Kyokushin Cup winner, 2005 World Wt Tour Champion
Today’s result: Baoligao wins 4:1. Abdura is the toughest of the 5 Russian fighters. He really gave Baoligao a big shock when his heavy punches knocked him down not once, but twice in the 2nd round! But experienced as he is & knowing Abdura’s weakness in the clinch, Baoligao proceeded to win points by throwing him many times. Though they did no damage to Abdura, it was enough for the judges to award the bout to Baoligao.
80KG
Chinese fighter:Liu Hailong
Ht:176cm
Past results:2003 Super Sanda King, 2004 China VS Japan Champion
Russian fighter:Samedov Rasim Azadovich
Ht:178cm
Age:23
Past results:2005 World Wt Tour Champion, 2nd Russian Masters’ Cup Champion
Today’s result: Liu Hailong dominates all the way. Samedov is totally out-matched by the Sanda legend, who returns with an unexpected ferocity & maturity in his techniques. Liu TKOs Samedov in the 5th round with a series of powerful crosses.
85KG
Chinese fighter:Wang Xunyong
Ht: Not available
Past results:2001 85KG Sanda King Runner-up, 2004 China VS Japan Champion
Russian fighter:Gastashev Timur Anuarovich
Ht:182cm
Age:19岁
Past results:2005 World Wt Tour Champion, 2x Russian Confederation Cup winner
Today’s result: Wang wins 4:1. Again this is another mismatch. Gastashev takes the punches, kicks & throws in abundance. It is a miracle that he still remains standing at the end of the 5 rounds!
90KG
Chinese fighter:Xue Fengqiang
Past results:2002 National Sanda Runner-up, 2005 10th National Games Silver Medalist
Russian fighter:Osipov Sergei ALexandrovich(The Bodyguard)
Ht:181cm
Age:27
Past Results:2001, 2002, 2003 3x Russian Open Champion, 2005 World Wt Tour Champion
Today’s result: Shock of the night – Xue knocks down Russian & World Champion Osipov with devastating punches right in the 1st round, and TKOs him (corner throws in the towel) in less than a min into the 2nd round! Osipov, the President’s Bodyguard, appeared to be no better than an amateur before Xue’s fierce attacks. His performance was ignominious, to say the very least. Xue, a long time veteran of many such challenges, proves that he is still a force to be reckoned with.
Final result: Chinese Sanda completely mauls Russian Kyokushin in a 5:0 victory.
*After a 2 year vacuum of pro Sanda VS Other style challenges, the result of this latest Sanda VS Karate tournament is dramatically disappointing, though not unexpected. Royama, as the team manager, obviously had not prepared the Russians well enough for this battle. They still fought in a Karate way at worst, or Kickboxing way at best. They have totally no weapons in the clinch. And the irony is that these Russian fighters did not lose by throws, which only scores ½ point for this tournament, but by the kicks and punches of the Chinese. After the tournament Royama said he was not giving up just yet, but I feel like telling him: don’t waste your time anymore; this is totally not your game. I’m losing interest in seeing one-sided battles like these faster than you can say Osu. BTW, readers please take note that there is a Sanda King of Kings 2005 tournament coming up on 29.12.2005.-Author
